Roy Clark, Registration Officer for the city’s Action 100 cycle ride, is pleading with potential riders to submit their applications in for the 25th annual cycle event sooner rather than later. Every year Roy is inundated with last minute applications for the 100 mile fundraiser in aid of UK charity Action Medical Research. Drowning in paperwork, in the past Roy has had to process hundreds of applications in the days before the bike ride.
“We expect, as always, a flood of last minute applications, especially as 2006 marks the Silver Jubilee of the Action 100. It would really ease my workload if prospective cyclists could return their forms as promptly as possible!” laughed Roy. “Applicants can sign up online at www.action100ride.org.uk, which is a hassle-free way of registering. Whatever you do though, don’t forget to enter!”
Action Medical Research was originally founded to cure polio and has since gone on to fund groundbreaking developments across a huge spectrum of medical areas. The Action 100, which goes through some of the nation’s most beautiful countryside, has become a major fundraising initiative in the South West, and Roy is one of a backbone of volunteers who have been crucial to the success of the ride in its 25 year history.
As well as Roy’s behind the scenes efforts, on the day a team of volunteers are employed to ensure everything runs smoothly. From the repair bike that patrols the route looking out for stranded cyclists, to the enthusiastic couples who man the regular refreshment stalls along the way, the event relies on the efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers.
“Once I’ve come up for air from under the paperwork, the event is really enjoyable!” notes Roy. “There’s always a great atmosphere on the day, with a pub lunch at Theale, and hot showers and cold beer at the end. To celebrate the 25th year, there’s also going to be a jazz band, BBQ and lots of family-friendly entertainment at the finish line.”
