An astonishing array of British cycling medals at the Commonwealth games, including a clean sweep in the men’s 4km individual track pursuit, means that cycling stakes are high for 2012. For those who can’t wait six years for their next cycling fix, this summer provides the perfect opportunity to test those nerves - Olympic or otherwise - in the Action 100 charity cycle ride, 100 miles from Bath and Bristol to London, which celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year.
The ride, which takes place on Sunday 27th August in aid of Action Medical Research, offers the sweet smell of fundraising success for a charity whose work continually touches the lives of normal people. Its riders are true ‘golden’ heroes: in 2006, inspirational participants include a man suffering from a debilitating form of Motor Neurone Disease, a 76 year old great grandfather, and a chronic asthma sufferer.
Jennifer Reid, Community Fundraising Manager for South West and Wales, hopes that Brits will be encouraged by recent Commonwealth successes to sign up for the ride. “You don’t have to be an Olympian to take part, but you do need enthusiasm to train – it’s a really rewarding challenge. You might even be inspired by England’s team pursuit gold medallists and sign up in a group – that way you can motivate one another and share the highs and lows!”
Throughout its history, Action Medical Research has championed pioneering medical work including the development of the polio vaccine, the hip replacement, and the use of ultrasound in pregnancy. Alongside wide-ranging projects across areas like migraine, stroke, joint mobility and diabetes, the charity is currently working on its ‘Touching Tiny Lives’ campaign, to investigate common issues encountered in pregnancy and labour.
Those inspired by British cycling successes, who fancy giving the Action 100 Ride a try, can look at the ride website for further details, www.action100.org.uk, or contact Roy Clarke, the registration officer, on (0117) 973 6993.
