Action Medical Research, the UK’s leading medical charity, is calling upon riders in Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride, Sunday June 19, 2005, to use it as the start of the training for ‘Bristol’s Boldest’: the annual Action 100 Bike Ride, which takes place on bank holiday weekend, Sunday August 28, 2005.
Their team will be near the Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride start line with Paddington Bear offering riders free bottles of water, donated by Constellation Europe.
Riders at Bristol’s Biggest have a choice of five routes this year, ranging from a nine mile ride to a 38 mile challenge. It’s a perfect warm up for ‘Bristol’s Boldest’: the 100 mile challenge presented by the Action 100, which annually challenges amateur cyclists throughout the UK to cycle from Bath and Bristol to London to raise funds for Action Medical Research
“Riders at ‘Bristol’s Biggest’ enjoy it so much that they’ll want more,” said Richard Westropp (Action 100 Chairman). “We want to challenge them to go ‘the extra mile’ and really show what they can do. It’s challenging, but easier than people think. People have all day to complete the ride on which they are fully supported with plenty of refreshment stops, a pub lunch at Theale and hot showers and beer available at the finish. St John Ambulance and Avon Valley Cyclery (for bike repairs) patrol the route to support riders. The atmosphere is electric.”
The ride was originally designed to persuade 100 riders to raise £100 each for the charity, which uniquely funds medical research projects at the point of breakthrough. This year, Action 100 aims to exceed the fantastic numbers it achieved in 2004 - 450 cyclists raising over £52,000 – by targeting itself with recruiting at least 500 people to get on their bikes for a good cause.
