Bristol Postie, Vic Garner is taking part in a 100-mile fundraising cycle ride for the 7th year in succession in aid of Action Research, the UK’s leading medical charity. Vic will be pedalling his way from Bristol to Surrey in The Action 100 Bike Ride on Sunday 24th August.
However, Vic doesn’t choose the easy option. Looking more like he’s taken a wrong turn on his daily round, Vic cycles in his uniform and rides the heavy bike he uses for his daily deliveries which has a miserly 3 gears.
Despite this being a bit of a busman’s holiday, Vic is as enthusiastic as ever ‘My manager approached me 7 years ago and asked if I wanted to take part and I haven’t stopped since. Not surprisingly, I always get a few wise cracks from other riders when they see me and my bike. But I usually get the last laugh when I whiz passed them at one of the refreshments stops!’
Vic is lucky because his training for The Action 100 is all in a days work. Not only does he ride 10 miles on his delivery round but also 2 miles to and from work at the Royal Mail office in Fishponds.
The Action 100 ride isn’t just for those who are cycling fit and Action Research is still looking for people to join Vic and rise to the challenge.
Vic continues ‘Over the years I’ve raised over £1500 for the Charity which does some great work all over the country including Bristol.’
Action Research is currently funding 100 projects around the country worth over £10 million, some of which are based in Bristol Hospitals. Local Action Research projects include work investigating the causes of premature birth, hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and cerebral palsy, leg ulcers/wound healing and bone healing.
Action Research has a broad appeal because of the vast range of diseases and disabilities that the Charity researches. Perhaps uniquely, the Charity can claim to have touched the lives of just about everyone in the UK through its groundbreaking work benefiting infants, children and adults.
