Bristol nurse, Chris Ludlam (aged 46), is gearing up for a 100-mile fundraising cycle ride for Action Research, the UK’s leading medical charity. This is the third year Chris, accompanied by his wife Louise Hibbins (aged 45), will be pedalling their way from Bristol to London in the Action 100. They will be joined by hundreds of other cyclists from the area on Sunday 24th August.
The couple from Long Ashton has a long history of organising and taking part in long-distance two-wheeled challenges for charity. But the Action 100 ride is particularly close to their hearts because Chris works as a Neo-natal nurse practitioner at the St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol.
Chris makes the connection saying ‘Action Research is particularly important to me as they fund research into premature birth, which directly helps those babies, and children I am dealing with on a daily basis.’
Louise adds ‘We really enjoy the day. The ride is well-organised and includes lots of breaks, splitting the 100 miles into manageable chunks with the chance to meet lots of other cyclists on the way.’
The Charity is currently spending £10 million on 100 projects around the country, two of which are Bristol-based Action Research projects investigating the causes of premature birth and the cause of hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and cerebral palsy at St Michael’s and Southmead Hospitals in Bristol.
Action Research investigates a vast range of diseases and disabilities. The Charity claims to have touched the lives of just about everyone in the UK through its groundbreaking work benefiting infants, children and adults.
